2010 BMW X5 M and X6 M Preview
BMW carved out its brand niche with the venerable 2002 in the late '60s. The brand was reinforced with the classic E30 3-Series platform sold from 1984 to 1991, and BMW came to mean"performance European sedan"for enthusiast drivers. BMW M (known as just"M"for Motorsport) is a subsidiary of BMW, created in the early '70s to facilitate BMW's racing program. The M brand gained notoriety in the '80s with the development of M versions of BMW's road cars, cars that became and flagships for BMW's brand. By focusing on pure performance for the driving enthusiast, the BMW M division developed into a real marketing tool for BMW.
