Budget 2009 Gossip - Car scrappage scheme will be a botch job
We’re hearing on the grapevine that the company car scrappage scheme the government is expected to announce in the Budget later today is going to be a botch job.
Reports suggest that rather than adopt Germany’s very successful car scrappage scheme , which has been in place since March and offers buyers of new, fuel-efficient cars a€2,500 (£2,273) discount if they scrap their old vehicle (if it's more than nine years old), the British government is only prepared to stump up£1k.
The headline figure likely to be quoted in the Houses of Parliament is£2k, but the government is expecting the car makers to stump up that additional grand. What, on top of all the other dealer discounts that are being offered at the moment? How ridiculous is that? How much profit does the government think these car companies are making from a new, fuel-efficient city cars? We're also certain that the amount of support will be capped and likely to be on a first come, first served basis. That means the makers of small cars will likely have a rush followed by a slump.
