Ferrari F50 spotted at Silverstone Classic
Make sure you put the Silverstone Classic in your diary for next year. The name doesn’t really sell it to be honest; last weekend’s event felt more like a mini motoring festival with classic racing, stunt shows, a fairground, new cars (and Harleys) on display, a live car auction plus some live music.
Special credit must go to the Ferrari Owners Club, who were out in force and allowed anybody to get close to the new Ferrari California, tens of F355s and even the super-rare Ferrari F50. We're getting pretty good at spotting the F50 , though just 349 units were ever made between 1995-97.
Ferrari presented the F50 as an F1 car for the road - it even used the same V12 engine as Alain Prost’s 1990 World Championship winning Ferrari F1 car, though capacity was increased from 3498cc to 4698cc in the quest for a broader range of torqe.
The only problem at the time was that the F50 was the replacement to the seminal Ferrari F40, and that decision was about as well received as the Jaguar XJS replacing the E-Type. Still, this Pininfarina design has aged remarkably wel and I just love how clean the interior layout is: just a couple of chairs, three air vents, some wind-up windows and a carbon fibre tub. Favourite view of the F50 has to be from behind. Look through the metal mesh and you can see how the F1-derived suspension is laterally mounted to the gearbox. Very cool.
