History Repeating: F1 2009 vs 1979

Because I’m a geek and it’s Friday afternoon, I’ve just been thinking about how similar the start of the 2009 F1 season is to the same period in 1979. Bear with me.

Thirty years ago the (very cool, wine-swigging) French Ligier team dominated the first two races of the season. In the same way Brawn GP has taken advantage of the new rules by optimising its rear diffuser design, Ligier perfected the JS11’s track-skimming, ground-effect skirts.

Inevitably the other teams caught up, most noticeably Williams and, eventual title winners, Ferrari. Now that the Brawn diffuser’s been passed as legal, don’t be too surprised to see a similar thing happening although I’d put my money on McLaren getting its act together quicker than Ferrari this time around.

Legend has it that an enraged team owner Guy Ligier smashed the moulds for the car’s sidepods halfway through the season to force a redesign and retake the upper hand. Let’s hope that Ross Brawn can control his temper slightly better.

Good luck this weekend, Jensen!
