In the car park - Volkswagen Golf GTI
We all appreciate the MkVI Volkswagen Golf GTI is a very impressive piece of kit, but after borrowing a five-door version with DSG last month, we found the experience a little bit underwhelming and even (whisper it) dull.
Maybe it was the fact the new Golf GTI looks, sounds and feels quite similar to the previous Golf GTI, and we were expecting a little bit more progress from the original hot hatch to justify having one over its Scirocco sibling.
That’s why this month we’ve booked in another Golf GTI, but specced it appropriately to give it the best chance yet of taking on Sky Motoring's Best All-Rounder for 2008 . So it’s a three-door with a six-speed manual, which keeps the cost close to the entry-level£22k pricetag.
Then we’ve theoretically specced the£300 optional 19in alloys (an essential piece of kit as soon as you look at them) and spent a further£700 on the Adaptive Chassis Control (ACC) system, which allows the driver to choose between Comfort, Normal and Sport settings. Game on.
