Mille Miglia 2009: The Mille's Best Mechanic
As a spanner hand on this formidable rally, I will attest (naturally) that the real heroes on the Mille Miglia are in fact not the drivers, but the blokes following behind with the greasy rags. And mechanics don’t get much greater than Jaguar Heritage chief technician John Sawyer (pictured right)....(yes, with the jazzy flip-flops).
John has been working through a massive checklist on the Heritage Jaguar D-Type since January, stripping the gearbox, checking all the castings and seals, while greasing, cleaning and polishing EVERYTHING. Well, it’s not as if we can just pop down Halfords if anything goes bust is it? Im actually really pleased John is my gaffer for the next few days too, because while I've actually felt quite stressed about race day, John by comparison, has been the human embodiment of an Indian panpipes CD.
