Thanks for my TVR memories, Wheeler

I wish I'd have had the opportunity to thank ex-TVR boss Peter Wheeler. I was already well on my way to becoming a car geek before I became aware of his fibreglass specials, but the cars he helped create dominated my bedroom wall for nearly a decade. Forget Ferrari, these cars had a British allure, were (I reckoned) affordable for the future and most importantly, had the coolest hidden door buttons ever (they were under the wing mirrors in case you were wondering).

His cars were also the main reason why I didn’t mind our holidays to the Blackpool Pleasure Beach. There was always  the off-chance you'd see or hear one burbling past. My dad took me round the factory one year; I can still smell the fumes of resin and walking out into the finishing yard where tens of TVRs were just poised in that very feral state, shimmering in their flip paint. Wheeler didn't bother with airbags or ABS or traction control, he just offered a very long throttle pedal.

To be honest, I find it pretty sad we’re actually talking about this as if it were the good ol’ days. TVR could still be great today, I’m certain there’s still a market for this type of car. Just keep everything crossed that TVR’s current custodian Nikolai Smolenski still feels that way too.
